Detective Jeb Pyre, from East Rockwell, Utah, leads the investigation of the murder of a Mormon mother Brenda Wright Lafferty, and her baby daughter Erica. With his partner Detective Bill Taba, they have their first suspect, the husband Allen Lafferty, who arrives later at the scene of the crimes, their house, covered in blood. From the start, he claims he is innocent, but Bill is certain of him being the killer. Jeb, who also is a Mormon, keeps his mind open and hears stories of how Brenda arrived and joined Allen’s big family, and their ways about the LDS Church. Allen reveals that he wasn’t any more part of the Church, or believes anymore what they say, and he believes that men with beards committed the murders.
