In 1990, Kern County Deputy Sheriff Joe Deacon is asked to go to L.A. to bring some evidence, for a witness to see in order for a suspect to go to a trial. Joe was a great Detective there before he is forced to leave, and now he sees some of his old co-workers who
are not happy to see him back there. Unfortunately, he has to stay one more day until they give him the evidence, so a young and promising Detective Jim Baxter, is asking to follow him in a crime scene, after he learns how good he was, in order to take a look.
The victim is Julie Brock, and there are similarities with a murder Joe was investigating and remains unsolved. From the beginning Joe finds things and Jim asks him to stay and help him with the investigation. Together they suspect that Julie was killed by a serial
killer, and they find other victims who they believe are his.
