Alfred King Of Wessex, plans to expand his kingdom to the North, and to remove the Danes who control it, while Uhtred along with Hild and Halig are riding to Northumbria, and to Eoferwic, where the Danes have just conquered. But the man who they left behind to command it, is defeated by the locals, who rise against him, inspired of what has happened in Wessex. Beocca is there, who asks for Uhtred’s help to secure Alfred’s payment for the ransom of Guthred, who intends to be the King of Cumbraland, and the slave master who has him, is in a village of Kjartan’s land. Uhtred agrees, and helps them release Guthred, who becomes King and with the help of Uhterd, builds an army, of both Saxons and Danes, to retake other territories from Kjartan and the Danes.
