Bloom is a 16-year-old fire fairy who was raised on Earth by human parents, and she arrives in Alfea, a college for Fairies in Otherworld. There are seven realms in the Otherworld. The classes start the next day, where she will learn to control her magic, and use it slowly. She meets her roommate Aisha, and later she will cross the safety barrier in order to try to use her magic. The barrier exists to protect the school from the Burned Ones, even though everyone thinks they have killed all of them 16 years ago, but one is there and already has killed one man. Bloom feels guilty for injuring her mother accidentally with a fire she caused, something her parents don’t know, or that she is a fairy, and when she crosses to Earth to see them, on her return the Burned One is expecting her. Farah Dowling, the Headmistress of Alfea is there to save her, and to capture him. She wants to interrogate him, while Bloom learns that her parents may have adopted her and that she took the place of their human baby.
